{"id":10468,"date":"2019-12-27T15:35:29","date_gmt":"2019-12-27T15:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/?page_id=10468"},"modified":"2020-05-03T03:37:52","modified_gmt":"2020-05-03T03:37:52","slug":"ecuador","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/index.php\/ecuador\/","title":{"rendered":"Ecuador"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\t<p>After Las Lajas we headed for the border into Ecuador.\u00a0 Although time consuming we made it out of Colombia and into Ecuador without incident.\u00a0 We met several other Overland travelers while there.\u00a0 Martin from Berlin has been on the road now since June 21st and he started in Alaska.\u00a0 He\u2019s riding solo and ended up riding with us for several hours to our stopping point for the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ec1-1024x437-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"437\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We finally caught up to our friends Rachel and Paul whom we met a month ago.\u00a0 They have been having a great trip on a bike just like Tracy\u2019s (BMW F800GS) with a sidecar for Rachel.\u00a0 We had a nice chat and dinner with them and Martin, swapping stories and experiences from the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ec-1024x622-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"622\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a great breakfast with Paul, Rachel, and Martin from Germany we packed up to hit the road.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuador6-1024x680-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It appeared to be a bit of a BMW motorcycle convention a the place we were staying.\u00a0 It was a beautiful spot over looking Lake Yahuarcocha.\u00a0 We\u2019re happy to spending a few nights at the same hotel as Paul and Rachel and getting to know them better and sharing stories from the road.\u00a0 Their sidecar set up is really cool.\u00a0 And so is their blog.<\/p>\n<p>You can read about their trip at: \u00a0 http:\/\/www.sidecartravels.co.uk\/<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuador8-722x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"722\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Typical Ecuador\u2026.Volcanoes all over the place. But the views were short lived as we had overcast and low clouds for most of the day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuador1-1024x209-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"209\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Driving through a small town I look over and see someone waving at me enthusiastically and then notice the van has Alaska plates!\u00a0 Haven\u2019t seen that on this trip yet.\u00a0 Turns out the van is from Alaska but Sylvi and Michael are from Germany.\u00a0 They\u00a0 bought the van in Alaska in August and have been on the road headed South ever since.\u00a0 It was certainly a treat to catch up with a couple other travelers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuador4-1024x810-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"810\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We crossed the equator today and stopped at a huge sun dial monument.\u00a0 Much to our surprise we ran into quite a few other travelers there as well.\u00a0 Paul and Rachel, Martin, Sylvi, Michael, and another couple from Germany.\u00a0 We had a nice time swapping stories from the road.\u00a0 This sun dial is exactly on the equator and so it is marked as such on the ground that it lines up with the volcanoes of the area and as a result is quite accurate.\u00a0 The locals take great pride in this monument as it is the only one that sits exactly on the equator.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuador3-1024x658-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"658\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And being at the equator my GPS reads 0 degrees.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuador2-547x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"547\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One foot in the northern hemisphere and one foot in the southern hemisphere.\u00a0 And yes, that\u2019s a boomerang in my hand.\u00a0 And I did throw it around the sun dial and consequently over two hemispheres.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuador-1024x556-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"556\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And, yes, of course I caught it!!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" into the Amazon basin, the weather got considerably warmer and the scenery began to change and become much greener and jungle like.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad6-734x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"734\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The locals are not only growing and harvesting from their gardens, but they are also pulling wood out of the Amazon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad2-1024x566-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"566\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We saw stacks of wood along the roadway all day long.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad-1024x442-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"442\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ever since we\u2019ve arrived in Ecuador it\u2019s been much more noticeable that agriculture is a big industry here.\u00a0 In a smaller way than the larger banana and papaya plantations in Colombia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad8-1024x610-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"610\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad7-1024x580-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"580\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s amazing to see how high and steep they raise crops here.\u00a0 Even the big greenhouses are up on the hillsides.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad9-1024x518-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"518\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Being in the Amazon you get every shade of green and it is extremely dense.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad12-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we headed deeper into the jungle we began crossing bridges.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad3-1024x702-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"702\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At one spot, the road just ended and we figured out there was a walking bridge, so we crossed the river on that.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until we were halfway across that we realized there was a road and rickety bridge just below the pedestrian bridge.\u00a0 We crossed two of these as we worked our way south.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad5-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we got to the third crossing, there was no bridge of any sort across the biggest river.\u00a0 Google maps was wrong this time.\u00a0 I asked the only guy around for directions and he pointed us up another road and told us it was 60km back tracking.\u00a0 We stopped in the middle of a narrow gravel path.\u00a0 As we were discussing if we were up for exploring a degrading gravel road into the unknown of the Amazon, a bus came down the road.\u00a0 We were dumbfounded that a bus would even fit on this narrow road.\u00a0 I asked for directions and was told it was good pavement for the full distance, just around the corner.\u00a0 And sure enough the road turned to pavement. We had to squeeze between the bus and the deep vegetation, but we did and headed back down the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad4-1024x674-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"674\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We arrived into the town of Macas.\u00a0 With Christmas just around the corner, decorations and lights are in full swing.\u00a0 Nothing compared to the excesses in the US though.\u00a0 And neither one of us miss that<\/p>\n<p>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ecuad1-794x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"794\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we left Macas, the front desk gals were excited and at the door to see us off.\u00a0 We learned that they are both from Cuba and we had a nice chat about their homeland, since we were just there.\u00a0 Now we have two new friends in Macas, Esther and Arianne.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Cuenca4-1024x738-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"738\" \/><\/p>\n<p>About an hour outside of town my front tire went flat.\u00a0 Fortunately it happen right by a gas station on the edge of a town.\u00a0 So we were able to get out of the rain to plug the tire.\u00a0 We noticed several holes in the tire that looked to be wearing irregularly\u00a0 We figured out that the tire was slowly but assuredly delaminating, which could be quite dangerous.\u00a0 We looked around several shops in the small town we were in, but no tires to fit my bike. So we decided to alter course for the day and ride three hours into the third largest city in Ecuador, Cuenca, and see if we could find a new tire.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Cuenca3-687x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"687\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ride out of the Amazon looked a lot like this.\u00a0 We were in clouds fog and pouring rain. The glimpses we did see were stunning.\u00a0 Big mountains covered in dense jungle foliage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Cuenca2-1024x583-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"583\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we progressed the terrain started to change as we climbed high into the mountains.\u00a0 We passed through endless villages and farm country.\u00a0 It seemed very European quite beautiful, despite the overcast weather<\/p>\n<p>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Cuenca1-1024x317-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"317\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a bit of bouncing around town asking for directions we ended up at the Yamaha shop, and they didn\u2019t have a tire either.\u00a0 But the store manager jumped on his scooter and led us to a Continental tire shop, where I was able to get a new tire. Then he took us to a hotel as it was getting to be late in the day.\u00a0 We are most impressed with this town and the people we\u2019ve met here.\u00a0 Everyone has been extremely helpful and friendly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Cuenca-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Even Cuenca has their Christmas decor out over the river Tomebamba.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Cuenca5-1024x674-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"674\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We spend a bit of time everyday packing and unpacking the bikes.\u00a0 After so much time on the road we both have our routines down.\u00a0 And with limited space on the bikes there\u2019s a pretty good system of how things get packed in.\u00a0 There\u2019s not much room left when all is said and done.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Er6-1024x634-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"634\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I woke up to a nearly flat tire, so back to the shop and the boys fixed it right up and got us on the road.\u00a0 The best tire shop I\u2019ve ever been to!!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Er5-1024x683-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our day was filled with overcast skies, sometimes heavy rain, and heavenly roads for a motorbike.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Er2-1024x518-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"518\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ecuador offers us stunning views everyday.\u00a0 As we work our way south and back into the mountains and away from the Amazon, the terrain is ever changing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Er4-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We finished our day in a small town with lots of character, Catacocha.\u00a0 A quick resupply run to the local grocery store found us extremely tempted to stock up on the largest bag of animal crackers we\u2019ve ever seen!!\u00a0 If only we had more room.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Er1-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" on a Saturday.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t terribly busy, but busy enough with families crossing between the countries for the weekend.\u00a0 We ended up spending five hours in the blazing sun waiting in line to get ourselves and the bikes checked out of Ecuador and checked into Peru.\u00a0 It was actually quite easy and everyone very friendly, but the wait was the challenging part.\u00a0 So far the border crossings in South America are very easy and civilized compared to Central America.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
