America"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\t<p>And so it began.\u00a0 Two guys, two bikes, and a long ride from Alaska to Ushuaia.\u00a0 With winter fast approaching in the north country, we needed to get the bikes most of the way across North America and into warmer climates.\u00a0 We headed out of our home in Eagle River, Alaska and started the drive south to my brothers in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>But, since Tracy and I live in Alaska, we knew we had to ride from the northern most tip in Alaska to the southern most tip of South America.\u00a0 So, with Prudhoe Bay just up the road, we have ridden as far North as we can.\u00a0 I thought it was only appropriate to post\u00a0 few pictures from that portion of the ride that we did a few years ago.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/CIMG2518-1024x768-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>F600 and the Trans-Alaska pipeline.<\/p>\n<p><img \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All dressed up and ready to ride.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A-1024x702-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"702\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The drive out of Alaska was spectacular.\u00a0 The further south and east we traveled in Alaska the further into fall it\u00a0 became.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A1-1024x511-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"511\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Riding past the Wrangell-St. Elias mountains is always a treat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A4-1024x764-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"764\" \/><\/p>\nThe pot of gold&#8230;.an F800GS!\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A5-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/>\n<p>Opting for the less popular route south, the Cassiar highway, we were rewarded with some fine riding and great roads.\u00a0 Like the Alaska Highway, this route is mostly paved, interspersed with gravel sections that keep the riding interesting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A6-1024x768-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This far north there are plenty of black bears.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A7-1024x582-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"582\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Cassiar Highway, a height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Out of British Columbia and back into Alaska.\u00a0 Well worth the extra miles to drive back into the quaint little town of Hyder.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A12-1024x737-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"737\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We have arrived at Mile 0.<\/p>\n<p><img is big business in this part of British Columbia and Alaska.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A15-1024x691-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"691\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We have both been to Hyder before, but what we really came for this time was the ride up the gravel road to Salmon glacier.\u00a0 This is possibly the most spectacular place that you can drive to in Alaska.\u00a0 The views are off the charts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A16-768x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A17-1024x578-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"578\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We weren&#8217;t the only ones visiting this place.\u00a0 We met another traveler heading from Patagonia to Alaska and back.\u00a0 Perhaps we&#8217;ll meet again as we travel further South.\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A18-1024x748-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"748\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A20-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/>We were lucky to have perfect evening light on the Salmon glacier.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A21-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A22-1024x408-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"408\" \/> The riding certainly doesn&#8217;t get much better loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A25-1024x768-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back into BC and a Customs check again<\/p>\n<p>.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A27-1024x768-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rain and fog and headed south.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A28-1024x624-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"624\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With a lot of miles to go and not much time to do it we passed through Jasper and Banff, which are beyond words.\u00a0 The scenery just kept getting better and better.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A29-1024x484-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"484\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A30-1024x605-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"605\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A31-1024x558-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"558\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally into the States we started logging long miles and long days headed for Arizona.\u00a0 It was harvest time in Montana.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A32-1024x354-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"354\" \/><\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A33-1024x368-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"368\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By the time we made it to Utah the temperatures were soaring and we were enjoying wide open spaces.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A34-1024x569-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"569\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Arizona was not much different.\u00a0 Hot, sunny, and beautiful.\u00a0 Curvy roads and great pavement kept the riding exciting.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A35-1024x607-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"607\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we finally made it to Arizona, my brother had the garage waiting and we had several days of work to do on the bikes.\u00a0 Although no major breakdowns, my front shock seals were shot and we had endless work to do to ready the bikes for the long ride south.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll take several months off, go back to work in Alaska and come back to the bikes at the end of October and point them South.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A36-1024x768-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first order of business was a thorough washing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A37-768x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And then the wrenching began.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A38-768x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the bikes finally went into the shop for tires, tune ups, and other random fixes, we had time to play.\u00a0 My nephews took us out to Lake Pleasant for a bit of Flyboarding.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A39-1024x768-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nothing makes me happier than having family support and help with getting this adventure off the ground.\u00a0 My brother Todd fixing my helmet while his wife Ginnie sews my riding pants.\u00a0 A HUGE thanks from us both for all the hospitality and help. \u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A41.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1077\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After flying the red-eye from Alaska we arrived in Phoenix and picked up the bikes from Motoghost.\u00a0 We set right to work on making final modifications and checking over every last detail.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PHX-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The work continues into the late hours of the night.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PHX2-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bikes are tuned and loaded.\u00a0 We are more than ready to hit the road\u00a0 Today we did a shakedown ride on the Great Western Trail.\u00a0 This trail goes from Mexico to Canada and we rode 60 miles of it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s definitely on the list to come back and ride some more of it.\u00a0 Headed South to the border in the morning.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/GreatWest2-1024x756-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"756\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Great Western trail offers up some astounding views width=\"1024\" height=\"539\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bikes are loaded and we are headed South from Phoenix, headed to Mexico.\u00a0 First stop, Copper Canyon.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Depart-768x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dos Amigos&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DosAmigos-1024x617-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"617\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With a late start out of Phoenix we made to Bisby, Arizona and spent the night.\u00a0 By first light we were on the road headed South into Mexico.\u00a0 With a lot of construction and backed up traffic we only made 160 miles.\u00a0 It feels really good to finally be on the road.\u00a0 Just over the border we rode along, a long fence along border.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PB010036-1024x331-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"331\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A serious cut in the hillside for the road,\u00a0 as we leave Sonora.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Mx6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We came across two sporks in the road and we took the one less traveled.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Mx2-1024x595-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"595\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The landscapes in northern Mexico are off the charts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Mx-1024x657-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"657\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fantastic ride from Nuevo Casas Grande to Creel today.\u00a0 The landscapes and twisty roads were amazing, but the real highlights were the people along the way.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/FullSizeRender.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tracy and I have been wanting to visit Copper Canyon for quite some time.\u00a0 We finally made it here and it did not disappoint.\u00a0 There are three canyons total and each one is bigger than the Grand Canyon.\u00a0 The roads are a motorcyclists dream!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/CopperCanyon2-1024x666-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"666\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hair pin turns are the norm here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/CopperCanyon8-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"507\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With such steep terrain, there tends to be a lot of rockfall on the roadway.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some of the rocks on the road are bigger than others.\u00a0 We were just glad these didn&#8217;t come down when we were driving by.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/CopperCanyon5-1024x522-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"522\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The off road riding is endless here.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But I quickly learned the perils of riding a loaded bike off road.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Wipeou-1024x570-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"570\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately there was no real damage to rider or Yucatan.\u00a0 With an Archaeologist hard at work, it was impressive to say the least.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
