{"id":9166,"date":"2019-11-14T17:51:01","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T17:51:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/?page_id=9166"},"modified":"2020-05-03T07:16:52","modified_gmt":"2020-05-03T07:16:52","slug":"chile","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/index.php\/chile\/","title":{"rendered":"Chile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Although getting into Chile had many steps, everyone was very friendly and helpful and it was quite easy and expedient.\u00a0 Possibly the easiest crossing we\u2019ve experienced.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC301778-1024x746-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"746\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We rode about 20 miles into Chile and decided to spend the night in a town called Arica.\u00a0 A very nice beach town with a really good feel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC301784-1024x486-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"486\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was clear to me that there was going to be quite the celebration with the amount of fireworks that were being sold out of cardboard boxes along the streets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC301814-682x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By 11pm the promenade along the beach and the beach itself started filling up with families and friends for a big fireworks display.\u00a0 Everything in South America happens much later than eveywhere else, it seems.\u00a0 Most people set up tables and had somewhat fancy and elaborate food and drinks for everyone in their party.\u00a0 And many people dressed up in fancy clothes, despite being on the street and on the beach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC301852-1024x572-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A fairly famous Chilean band named Amerikan Song, played from about 11pm until 2am right along the beach.\u00a0 They were actually quite good and had everyone<\/p>\n<p>dancing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC301863-1024x588-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"588\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The beach was even quite filled up with people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC301917-1024x570-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"570\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were three fireworks displays in three different parts of town.\u00a0 From the beach I could see all three, which were all equally impressive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC301958-1024x745-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"745\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was certainly something to sit on the beach and see fireworks over the Pacific. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve seen that before.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC301998-711x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"711\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By 3am, most people were gone and there was quite a mess to be cleaned up.\u00a0 This was a great place to ring in the New Year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC302105-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Happy New Year!!\u00a0 We had a late start as we said goodbye to the friends we had met in the hostel we were staying at.\u00a0 Other travelers and another motorcyclist.\u00a0 Of course, I neglected to take a picture of the group as they saw us off from the hostel.<\/p>\n<p>There were several sections of roadway through big sand dunes that were quite interesting today.\u00a0 It\u2019s clear there is no shortage of sand in this place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC310011-1024x664-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"664\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This part of Chile is all desert.\u00a0 Long, open roads.\u00a0 Vast, dry, hot, flat nothingness.\u00a0 It\u2019s impressive in many respects, but the riding can get quite monotonous.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC310015-1024x675-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were dust devils like I have never seen.\u00a0 So many that you couldn\u2019t count them all and many of them quite large.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC310030-1024x626-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>More roadway though sand dunes as we headed towards Iquique.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC310061-1024x573-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"573\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Iquique is quite a dramatic city of about 300,000 people.\u00a0 It sits right on the ocean in a giant bowl surrounded by sand dunes. It\u2019s very cosmopolitan and it was clear they had a big party here last night as well. \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/PC310062-1024x380-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After leaving Iquique we spotted a bunch of rust across the desert, and so we had to go investigate.\u00a0 It turned out to be an abandoned Saltpeter works site that started in 1872 and was abandoned in the 1960s.\u00a0 In 2005 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.\u00a0 Needless to say it was pretty impressive to see.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are numerous similar sites in this area, some much larger than this one.\u00a0 At Santa Laura there were 1000 residents that lived in a company town.\u00a0 The school alone had 130 students at its height.\u00a0 It\u2019s very hard to imagine living and working so remotely in such a harsh and hot environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/E-51-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The desert is slowly overtaking the site, but it was impressive to see none the less.\u00a0 To say it was hot at this place, would be a bit of an understatement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/E-23-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We drove more straight, long desert roads headed towards the town of San Pedro de Atacama.\u00a0 We battled a cross or head wind the entire afternoon.\u00a0 Someone must have noticed that it\u2019s often windy in this area, as we passed through a very large wind farm along the way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/E-60-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we worked our way south we entered into the Atacama desert.\u00a0 This is a 49,000 square mile desert situated between the Andes and the Chilean coastal mountains.\u00a0 It is the driest non-polar place in the world.\u00a0 There are indications that it did not rain here from 1570 to 1971.\u00a0 That\u2019s quite a dry spell! \u00a0 Today it averages only .6 (that\u2019s POINT 6!) inches a year.\u00a0 It could be the oldest desert in the world and it is so dry that several peaks above 20\u2019000 ft. in the area are glacier free.\u00a0 We were regularly at 10,000\u2032 as we drove into the Atacama region. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/D-42-1024x379-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"379\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The further we got into the region the hotter it became, registering 95F on the thermometer.\u00a0 Although the road was generally straight for as far as you could see, this one particular corner was painted red and had several memorials and wrecked cars, scattered about.\u00a0 Obviously it gave drivers used to the straight roads some problems in the past.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/D-72-1024x366-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"366\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just before we arrived in the small town of San Pedro we passed the Valley of the Moon.\u00a0 A very Grand Canyon looking area.\u00a0 It\u2019s seems like maybe this is how big canyons get started.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/D-74-1024x486-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"486\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We had plans to explore around San Pedro and the Atacama desert today.\u00a0 This morning before we left, I checked my tire pressure and realized my back tire was flat.\u00a0 I found the bad spot and it appears to be split all the way down to the cord of the tire.\u00a0 So we had to deal with it. I pulled the tire off and upon closer inspection found several other areas that it is starting to split.\u00a0 The best we can figure is it\u2019s a defective tire.\u00a0 So I found a shop in town that could patch it and at least get us on the road again.\u00a0 The closest tire for a bike this size is in Santiago, over 1000 miles away. So hopefully this tire makes it that far before it falls apart.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/D-86-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The tire shop was quite the experience and certainly not up to US standards.\u00a0 And as always trying to have a conversation in Spanish can be challenging.\u00a0 Some countries the Spanish is easy, but Chile isn\u2019t one of them.\u00a0 Their annunciation and truncating of words makes understanding Spanish in these parts a bit of a challenge.\u00a0 None the less, the tire guy was excellent if not a bit distracted.\u00a0 He got the job done.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1020323-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1020328-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We have come across quite a few other travelers in San Pedro as it is quite touristy.\u00a0 Nicolas is from Argentina and has been on the road for two years.\u00a0 He said he needs another year to complete his travels of South America before he heads for home.\u00a0 We are consistently amazed how much stuff some of these other motorcyclists are hauling around. It\u2019s unfathomable.\u00a0 Oddly enough Nicolas had the spare tire that I needed, but wasn\u2019t interested in selling it. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1020330-1024x779-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"779\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I went for a sunset ride around the Atacama desert to see how the tire would do and it worked great.\u00a0 The views were quite immense across the desert and the surrounding volcanoes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4766-1024x453-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"453\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 1100GS has been performing quite well despite being 18 years old!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4771-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the morning we rode out to the Salar de Atacama\u2026the Atacama Salt Flats.\u00a0 It\u2019s the largest salt flat in Chile encompassing 1200 square miles.\u00a0 It is the third largest in the world.\u00a0 Because it has no outlet from the surrounding mountains and gets very little rain, most of it has a rough surface.\u00a0 It is also home to a large pink flamingo reserve.\u00a0 The roads leading into and around are quite desolate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1030066-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We were popular guys here as several buses pulled in with tourists showing up noticing our Alaska plates.\u00a0 Both these guys were motorcyclists back home and asked to have a picture with us\u2026\u2026one from Italy and one from Costa Rica<\/p>\n<p>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1030065-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The salt flats are immense and you could easily wander around out here for days in the stifling heat, if there were not marked trails.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4788-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were several areas that had standing water, but it of course is highly saturated with salt.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4841-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having never seen flamingos before, they were pretty interesting to learn about.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4824-1024x622-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"622\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4865-1024x687-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"687\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After several hours on the road, my tire gave out.\u00a0 Four more splits in the tire developed that were leaking air.\u00a0 Fortunately it happened right near a gas station, but in the middle of nowhere.\u00a0 A few guys passing through called the next big town an hour and a half away to try to track down a new tire for me.\u00a0 Meanwhile I strapped my tire on Tracy\u2019s bike and rode 20 miles to the next small town that had a guy that repaired tires, to see if we could put a tube in mine and limp to town<\/p>\n<p>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1030123-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Don Carlos got me all fixed up, but it was an experience.\u00a0 You can see all his certifications on the wall behind him\u2026..tire repair guy, carpenter, welder, and fireman.\u00a0 He was pretty proud of his skill set and took good care of me.\u00a0 He just shook his head when I told him I had ridden there from Alaska<\/p>\n<p>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1030127-690x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>None the less, the tire repair didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 So, as it turned out, one of the guys that stopped earlier, Christian, waited to make sure we had the tire fixed.\u00a0 He and his girlfriend both ride BMWs, so he was pretty keen to make sure we got back on the road.\u00a0 He convinced us to load the bike on his truck and he drove us the hour and a half to the next town, Antofagasta.\u00a0 AND took us straight to his friends new shop, who specializes in BMWs.\u00a0 They worked late for us, as we didn\u2019t arrive until after 6pm.\u00a0 We are consistently amazed by the generosity of strangers.\u00a0 We were really lucky today that things worked out as they did<\/p>\n<p>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1030136-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had several issues with my bike that they took care of.\u00a0 Most notably my tire that was splitting down to the cord in four or five spots and not holding air.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1030126-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I also noticed a few weeks ago that the lower bolt holding my rear shock to the frame was broke and needed replacing.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t come across a suitable replacement yet, but riding for too long like this could be problematic and dangerous.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1030139-782x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"782\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The guys at the shop put on a new tire and even rounded up a replacement bolt for the shock.\u00a0 What an amazing shop experience we had at Big Trail Service Chile.\u00a0 And we made four great new friends that even led us on their motorcycles to a great hotel right on the ocean. A huge thanks to Ceferino, Luis, Christian, and Manuel.\u00a0 Hope to see you guys in Alaska when you ride North!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1030153-1024x677-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"677\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Antofagasta turned out to be a really neat city and we had a great view from the hotel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1030161-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With Tracy having a bit of a stomach bug, we decided to stay in Antofagasta for an extra day.\u00a0 Even in daylight, it\u2019s a beautiful place.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1040216-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This city is very metropolitan and full of color and differing architectural styles.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4995-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I decided to ride North along the coast for a few hours to the tiny fishing village of Santa Maria.\u00a0 This was a very tiny town and seemed to only exist from it\u2019s small fishing fleet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4876-1024x565-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"565\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yes, very small indeed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4879-1024x606-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"606\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Several of the boats here were bringing in a type of seaweed or kelp from the ocean and laying it out to dry.\u00a0 It looked like hot, slippery work in the mid day sun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4903-1024x658-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"658\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was unclear to me what happens next in this process or what it is used for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4894-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I then rode to another side of the bay to a town called San Luis, which was much bigger and had a good beach.\u00a0 I was told people from the big city come to this place on the weekends for the nice and uncrowded beaches.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4936-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I did stop at one roadside stand to have a cold drink.\u00a0 There was no one there, but when I started yelling Hola, a few gals came out and helped me.\u00a0 When they kept laughing at my lack of Spanish speaking skills, the rest of the family heard them and had to come out to have a laugh as well.\u00a0 Before I knew it I had nine people in front of me, peppering me with questions about where I was from and what I was up to.\u00a0 I tried to keep up with equal questions back at them.\u00a0 So, we had Grandpa, Grandma, several kids and spouses and three grand kids.\u00a0 They ALL worked the little food stand during the summer.\u00a0 In the winter, back to the city a half hour away, as the kids had to be back in school.\u00a0 A very fun half hour was spent with this generous and laughter filled family.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1040181-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The coastline here certainly had some beautiful places<\/p>\n<p>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4910-1024x522-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"522\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 Heading back towards the city, the entire coastline is composed of sandy cliffs<\/p>\n<p>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4970-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_4975-1024x562-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"562\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile back in the city, the kids must be out of school for the summer as the one small beach in town was packed with families. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_5019-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was not a bit of sand left to put another umbrella on!!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_5016-1024x637-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"637\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With several piers and causeways around, the kids were having the time of their lives jumping off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_5037-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see\u2026not much beach and a whole lot of kids.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t resist and did go for a swim for an hour or so.\u00a0 It was just to fun to watch all these kids enjoying themselves.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1040254-1024x634-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"634\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you look close in this picture, just to the left of the tall building in the foreground you can see where the beach is.\u00a0 The rest of the waterfront in this town is rocky.\u00a0 All in all a very active city with a lot of people out and about.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1040216-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We put in a lot of miles today as we traversed further south across the Atacama desert.\u00a0 We have seen our fair share of long straight roads.\u00a0 Did I mention long and straight??<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1050356-1024x582-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"582\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We did stop at Manos de Desierto\u2026..which is an artists sculpture out in the middle of nowhere. It\u2019s an iconic piece that I have seen in pictures of other travelers for years and years.\u00a0 Oddly enough, it\u2019s pretty anti-climactic.\u00a0 It\u2019s a big hand sticking out of the sand.\u00a0 It\u2019s been in place since 1992.\u00a0 AND a popular stop.\u00a0 We were there for about 15 minutes and there were four other vehicles that stopped in that time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1050323-1024x682-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our route finally cut back towards the west coast off Chile and ran along the Pacific for quite some time.\u00a0 The roads remained long and straight.\u00a0 We\u2019re in Vallenar tonight and we\u2019ll be in Santiago in a couple of days.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1050394-1024x527-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"527\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we headed South this morning it was fairly cool out.\u00a0 As we parallel the Pacific coast we have been seeing very large wind farms quite regularly. \u00a0\u00a0 The closer we get to the big city of Santiago the more the driving here is like doing a road trip in the States.\u00a0 Great roads, nice gas stations with convenience stores, and more traffic.\u00a0 And on this stretch we have been seeing a lot of other travelers on motorcycles as well as riders out for a day ride from Santiago.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1060421-1024x472-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"472\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We even saw our second array of solar panels.\u00a0 This one was by far LARGEST solar farm I have ever seen.\u00a0 It was huge fields and then more fields of solar panels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1060404-1024x282-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At one gas stop today we noticed a couple flashy BMW\u2019s\u2026nearly the same bikes as ours, but for the police.\u00a0 His was the updated street model of my bike and hers s the same bike that Tracy is riding.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure a police woman in the US would get away with bright red lipstick and very form fitting pants, like they do in Chile. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1060409-1024x706-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"706\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For quite awhile we were about a half a mile behind a group of six riders, also on BMW adventure bikes like ours.\u00a0 After cresting a small rise on a corner they were all stopped.\u00a0 I immediately pulled over and saw one of the bikes laying in the middle of the highway and rider the face down by the guardrail not moving.\u00a0 We started slowing down traffic and lots of other cars and trucks were stopping to help.\u00a0 A mangled bike in the middle of the road and a fellow rider helmet down in a pool of blood was about all we could handle.\u00a0 It made us both realize the fine line we are on by traveling on two wheels in foreign countries.\u00a0 It was on both of our minds for the rest of the day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1060425-1024x584-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"584\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A few hours later, a one armed guy came up to us at a gas stop and mentioned the accident.\u00a0 He was there shortly after we were.\u00a0 He said the rider had a hinged helmet and that cut his head somehow when he went down. Thus all the blood.\u00a0 The rider was alive, but I don\u2019t think we\u2019ll ever know the outcome.\u00a0 The other motorcyclists thought that the rider fell asleep due to the drowsiness caused by his diabetes medication, and hit the guardrail.\u00a0 It was a bit of an emotional scenario for the one armed fella, as he lost his arm in a motorcycle accident several years ago.\u00a0 Needless to say, a very sad deal on both counts.\u00a0 Tracy and I rode off in silence with being extra careful at the forefront of our thoughts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1060436-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We continued South along the coast with fantastic ocean views. We\u2019ll spend the next\u00a0 few days in the colorful town of Valparaiso.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1060431-1024x470-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"470\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We spent the day exploring Valparaiso.\u00a0 It was an important port town before the Panama Canal was built.\u00a0 Today it is the second largest municipality in Chile and has become a popular tourist destination.\u00a0 It\u2019s known for it\u2019s colorful buildings and graffiti that is everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_5329-1024x642-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"642\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some of the graffiti looks just like graffiti anywhere, but some of it are works of art.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_5110-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_5109-678x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"678\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_5261-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_5113-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>People here were quite friendly but I was stopped at least six times on the street because I was carrying a camera that was exposed.\u00a0 I was told over and over again that it was a friendly but dangerous city and my camera would be stolen if I didn\u2019t put it away.\u00a0 It was a Sunday so there wasn\u2019t a lot of people around, but I never once felt threatened.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_5188-1024x678-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a day of exploring we were treated to a stunning sunset over the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/DSC_5361-1024x470-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"470\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of our requirements for any place that we stay is it has to have secured parking for the bikes.\u00a0 For the past two days we\u2019ve had them in a courtyard surrounded by bougainvillea and a row beautiful roses.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1080002-1024x676-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"676\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ride into Santiago was short and uneventful.\u00a0 We are up against the Andes again, so the mountains are ever present on the horizon, often times with snow on them.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troyhenkels.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/P1080006-1024x492-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"492\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tracy is flying back up to Quito and Cusco for three weeks to do some traveling with his wife.
